[ Summary ] According to investigative reports from the Japanese Society of Dialysis Therapy, infectious diseases are the most important causes of death among dialysis patients.
In particular, pneumonia and sepsis are the two major causes of death. Guidelines for management of pneumonia (community-acquired, hospital-acquired, nursing- and healthcare-associated) were published by the Japanese Respiratory Society for diagnosis, classification, and treatment of pneumonia.
Primary causes of sepsis are catheter-related blood stream vascular infection, vascular-associated infection, and critical limb ischemia. Guidelines of Vascular Access Construction and Repair for Chronic Hemodialysis were published by the Japanese Society of Dialysis Therapy for the management of vascular access in hemodialysis patients. Influenza and pneumococcal vaccines are effective in preventing such infections. Direct antiviral drugs improve mortality among hemodialysis patients diagnosed with hepatitis C viral infection.
