[ Summary ] Long-term application of peritoneal dialysis (PD) requires ensuring the safety of dialysis patients using optimal dialysis and preventing the development of peritonitis and encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. Although the decrease in residual renal function is likely to result in fluid overload or inadequate dialysis, there are some cases in which PD is switched to hemodialysis without making a sufficient effort to apply ingenious adjustments to the PD prescription or dietary intervention. Such cases can presumably be improved through correct intervention. The 5-year duration of PD, which was set based on findings obtained in a previous era that included use of acidic PD solutions, has been medically invalidated and needs to be re-evaluated in Japan, where neutral PD solutions are widely used currently.
