[ Summary ] The term 'renal osteodystrophy' has recently been replaced by the term 'CKD-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD)', which includes abnormalities in bone and mineral metabolism as well as vascular calcification. The Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy clinical practice guidelines for management of secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic dialysis patients was originally published in Japan in 2006. Then, we revised the guidelines to include several new policies. The new guidelines were published in Japan in 2012. These guidelines were established depending on outcomes concerned with mortality in patients with CKD. This article contains information concerning the clinical significance of outcomes and practice markers in CKD-MBD guidelines.
