[ Summary ] Recently, the efficacy of ultrasonography-guided techniques has been reported for vascular puncture access in hemodialysis patients. The characteristics of ultrasonography-guided techniques include the fact that medical staffs can puncture the vascular access site under direct visualization of the vessel and surrounding tissue, as well as the puncturing needle. The indications for ultrasonography-guided techniques include difficulties with punctures, choosing the best vessel needed to provide the greatest extent of safety during punctures, and providing protection of vessel from injury during the puncture process.
It is important to understand both characteristics of puncture techniques without ultrasonography and when using ultrasonography, to choose the right technique for punctures in individual cases.
