[ Summary ] In 2008, the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy (JSDT) proposed standards for the quality of hemodialysis fluids. After adoption of those standards, dialysis fluid quality markedly improved in facilities across the country. However, the 2008 standard specifies only microbiological qualities and does not cover toxic chemicals. The basis of toxic chemical management depends on the source water and water treatment equipment for hemodialysis. In 2016, the JSDT proposed a revision of its standards for dialysis fluid quality for hemodialysis, adding control standards for toxic chemicals and water treatment equipment. The aim of those changes was to achieve dialysis water quality superior to that used in terminal dialysis fluids.
