[ Summary ] It is important for patients with kidney diseases to consume adequate amounts of lipids as energy sources. Excessive intake of lipids increases the risk of development and progression of chronic kidney disease via dyslipidemia. On the other hand, energy deficiency enhances protein catabolism. This is negative from the viewpoint of protecting kidney function because of factors including sarcopenia, impaired glucose tolerance accompanied by skeletal muscle decrease and lack of exercise.
Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT), which have attracted attention, have interesting characteristics (tasteless, odorless, low accumulation, easy digestion and high rates of absorption). It is hoped that MCT may provide the effect of reducing protein-energy malnutrition and sarcopenia. As a result, MCT may provide great potentials in future medical care.
