[ Summary ] In order to ensure quality of patient care and patient safety, it is important for hospitals to define necessary education, skills, knowledge, and other requirements for individual positions. It is necessary to recruit individuals who meet those requirements. Alternately, we must provide education and training to staff members to develop their skills and knowledge to meet the needs of patients. In the Joint Commission International accreditation standards for hospitals, standards related to staff recruitment, education and training, as well as qualifications are compiled. Standards regarding verification of medical staff members' credentials and clinical privilege delineation, which are not commonly used by the Japanese healthcare community are described.
