[ Summary ] PMMA (polymethlmethacrylate) membranes provide functionality in terms of mechanisms for both diffusion and adsorption. Many clinical investigations have been performed concerning biocompatibility, removal characteristics, long-term clinical experiences and usefulness. They have been evaluated since their introduction in 1977 as the world's first hollow-fiber synthetic polymer membrane.
For approximately 40 years, PMMA membranes have been continuously improved in response to clinical needs.
Membrane improvement has been brought about by accurate membrane control at the nano-level. This has provided not only improved removal ability but also biocompatiblity improvements.
Further PMMA membrane contributions to dialysis therapy are expected with further improvements provided by the cooperation of those conducting clinical studies and membrane engineering.
