[ Summary ] The biocompatibility of dialysis membranes should ultimately be evaluated in clinical settings. However, it is difficult to interpret clinical data because of the involvement and mutual influence of a variety of factors. Meanwhile, in the basic research field of material sciences, materials for biological applications are mostly evaluated under non-clinical conditions. To acquire new information, it is useful, therefore, to evaluate the biocompatibility of materials, to the extent possible, under conditions similar to clinical ones by using in vitro experiments. These evaluations will enable clinical data to be integrated into material evaluation data, thereby enabling the incorporation of the combined data into the design of membrane materials.
