[ Summary ] Severe adverse reactions such as anaphylactoid shock have been reported in patients receiving hemodialysis using polysulfone (PS) membranes. The number of reports identifying polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) eluted from PS membranes as the cause of severe anaphylactoid shock is limited. In this paper, we mention the biocompatibility of dialysis membranes based on our study of structural changes in PVP due to sterilization. Furthermore, we introduce important factors to avoid severe adverse reactions due to the biocompatibility of dialysis membranes in typical hemodialysis treatments.
