[ Summary ] | The frequency of atherosclerotic comorbidity, especially peripheral arterial disease (PAD), has increased due to increases in the number of diabetic and elderly incidence of hemodialysis patients. Once PAD worsens to cause critical limb ischemia (CLI), the prognosis for these patients is dramatically worse. CLI is one of the terminal, life-threatening complications associated with atherosclerosis. Wound infection, concomitant malnutrition and cardiovascular comorbidity strongly affect patients' survival. In cases involving hemodialysis patients with CLI, antibiotic treatment alone cannot improve the patients' condition. There still remain a number of problems to be solved to achieve limb salvaging and saving patients'lives. The most important factor is providing a full medical team approach including appropriate antibiotic treatment, re-vascularization, wound therapy, and nutritional strategies. |
