[ Summary ] The onset of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is based on microaspiration through the tracheal tube. Many diseases cause lung infiltration during ventilation management ; hence, there are no gold standard criteria for VAP diagnosis. Initial antimicrobial therapy for the causative bacteria is important, because VAP is the most common cause of nosocomial infection in the intensive care unit. VAP is an iatrogenic condition ; hence, preventing it is also important. Surveillance of VAP, recognition of its risk factors, and compliance of an applicable VAP bundle for each facility are required. VAP cannot be prevented by a single individual, and it is necessary to raise awareness among the involved staff.
