| [ Summary ] | One of the advantages of PD for the elderly is better maintenance of residual renal functions. Elderly PD patients can achieve improved levels of well-being with low volume peritoneal dialysates. The application of dialysis prescriptions using APD and/or icodextorin will decrease the burden of changing PD bags both for elderly patients and families who support them (assisted PD). It is possibile that the risk of dementia for patients who started treatment with PD is lower compared to those who started with HD. The many problems associated with elderly PD patients must be resolved as the number of elderly PD patient increases. Elderly PD patients will create a paradigm shift in dialysis therapy in Japan. | |
