[ Summary ] Sarcopenia is a clinical condition causing a decrease in age-related skeletal muscle mass reduced muscular strength, and ability to achieve ADL or suitable levels for physical activity. Sarcopenia may lead to falls, and fractures. Progressive sarcopenia may become a risk factor to leading to a need for nursing care, frail. Lack of vitamin D, in association with decreased muscular strength, and increased likelihood of falls are closely associated with sarcopenia. Elderly patients have been reported to have vitamin D receptor alterations in skeletal muscles. Active forms of vitamin D are recomended for prophylactic treatment.
