[ Summary ] Clinical studies reveal the risk of hip fractures is elevated in dialysis patients. Fracture risk has not been demonstrated to be associated with parathyroid function. Experimental studies with animals have shown deteriorated bone viscoelastic properties along with a decrease in kidney function. Deterioration of viscoelastic bone properties has partially been alleviated by administration of an oral uremic toxin binder. Incidence of kidney injury was unchanged. We termed this disease condition "uremic osteoporosis". The pathological characteristics of uremic osteoporosis look quite similar to those of osteoporosis in the elderly population.
