[ Summary ] |
Advances in immunosuppressive agents have significantly improved graft survival in relation to kidney transplantation. Despite these encouraging trends, long-term survival after kidney transplantation has remained unchanged. The high mortality rates in kidney transplant patients are attributed primarily to malignancy as well as infection. The overall risk of post-transplant malignancy (PTM) is considerably higher than in the general population because there are unique points of risk seen in relation to PTM. To improve long-term graft survival rates, clinical physicians should understand the risk factors and pay attention to the incidence of PTM. Cancer screening is a remarkable tool because it provides the advantages of reducing the rate of PTM development and lowering mortality rates associated with kidney transplantation. |
