[ Summary ] Less than a decade after dialysis therapy became a routine therapy for patients with chronic renal failure, there were already suggestions that the incidence of malignancy was elevated in ESRD patients. It has not been clearly clarified, however, whether cancer risk is higher in ESRD patients. Nationwide, prospective epidemiological studies with new dialysis patients have revealed the following : 1) overall risk of cancer is elevated in both males and females 2) male patients are at increased risk of kidney cancer and multiple myeloma of the colon and liver 3) female patients are at increased risk of uterine cancer 4) the highest incidence of cancer occurres in the first five year of dialysis.
