[ Summary ] End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is a powerful determinant of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and is associated with a remarkably high incidence of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) has become one of the leading causes of death in dialysis patients. It is suggested that the prevalence of PAD at the initiation of maintenance dialysis therapy does not decrease treatment efficacy. Compared to other forms of cardiovascular disease, relatively little attention has been paid to the overall prevalence of PAD in patients with ESRD. Most traditional risk factors for atherosclerosis are strongly associated with PAD, but we also should pay attention to exercise training and/or improvements in malnutrition and inflammation for retarding progression of PAD in ESKD patients. It is essential to prevent PAD in the predialytic phase of chronic kidney disease.
