[ Summary ] The main cause of falls is musculoskeletal (muscle, ligament, joint, bone, cartilage) and neurologic disorders. However, underlying factors such as nutritional disorders and general weakening, particularly in the elderly are also causative. Certain medications bring about unsteadiness which can lead to falls. Therefore, the fundamentals of fall prevention are normalization of musculoskeletal and neurological function as well as training to maintain function. Analysis of the cause of falls occuring in daily life shows that routine actions are leading causative factors. Therefore, maintaining a safe environment in which individuals perform daily activities is vital. It must be recognized that approximately 10 % of those aged 65 or older require nursing care for fractures due to falls.
