[ Summary ] Hospital-acquired infections are medical incidents which have the potential to impair the trust of patients and endanger the survival of dialysis facilities. Basic of infection control must be a standard precaution. Transmission-based precautions must be added as needed. One prevailing cause of outbreaks of viral hepatitis is inappropriate use of injectable agents. Proper treatment of HCV infected dialysis patients, according to guidelines, is essential in providing HCV infection control. HIV infection is becoming more widespread in Japan. Guidelines indicate hemodialysis HIV infected patients could be treated in any facilities. In order to prevent an outbreak of infl uenza in dialysis units, confirmation of the physical condition of dialysis patients, the establishment of a reporting system, vaccination, temporal and spatial separation, and prophylactic administration of anti-influenza drugs are required.
