[ Summary ] Medical treatment officially begins following the process where the medical staff provides adequate explanations to the patient and family, answering any questions they may have. The patient then agrees to the medical treatment which will be provided. The basis of modern medicine is to perform this process of informed consent (IC) in an appropriate manner.
Considerations of individualization of IC have become more important in the field of maintenance dialysis. Drastic changes in patient backgrounds and diversity of choices for dialysis as renal replacement therapy (RRT) have occured. These include processes by which IC can be individualized by taking into account the following : 1) the patient's physical state, including age, gender, general condition, stage of disease, complications and cognitive function, 2) their home and work environment and 3) the types of RRT chosen.
