[ Summary ] The first edition of the "Guidelines for the Construction and Repair of Vascular Access in Chronic Hemodialysis" was published by the Japan Society for Dialysis Therapy (JSDT) in 2005. The 2011 version used this first edition as a foundation and was formulated by use of a collection of data following publication of the first edition. In the 2005 edition, topics mainly dealt with the different types of vascular access (VA). However, in the 2011 edition, topics are arranged in a time-line fashion, proceeding from before to after VA construction. This should make finding pertinent information easier. The guidelines might be thought of as "Thought for Vascular Access", which must be used as an introduction to VA. When we provide VA to individual patients, we must use proper techniques while considering the significance of VA and the social needs of the patient.
