[ Summary ] The body fluid status in hemodialysis (HD) patients should be adequately controlled to prevent symptoms due to overhydration or dehydration. However, the management of body weight includes various complications associated with life style, including dietary habits. To control intradialytic weight gain, dietary education including sodium restriction should be performed in clinical settings. Strict dietary education may lead to a risk of malnutrition, due to decreased protein intake. We must pay attention to patients' nutritional status along with restrictions. Setting adequate dry weights is essential for HD patients. Dry weight settings should be achieved while understanding the issues associated with each traditional mathod for dry weight analysis. The plasma water index (PWI) and plasma refilling coefficients (mean Kr), which are economical and easily calculated as markers of vascular permeability, are also useful for dry weight analysis.
