[ Summary ] The goal of hemodialysis therapy is not only to achieve long-term survival, but also to ensure a high quality social life. Moreover, the therapy should cause as few complications as possible, while retarding progression. Therefore, components of dietary therapy for patients on maintenance dialysis should also contribute to realization of these goals. With recent technological advances in dialysis therapy, the ability of dialysis therapy to remove uremic toxins has improved to a level not possible in the past. Pharmacological therapies, such as phosphorus adsorbents, have also improved markedly. On the other hand, the progressive aging of dialysis patients presents new challenges such as concurrent sarcopenia and malnutrition due to chronic inflammation. The demand for a dietary therapy which addresses all these issues is increasing.
