[ Summary ] Diabetic nephropathy is a major problem in Japan. Albumin excretion rates should be measured for all diabetic patients at least once a year. Blood glucose and blood pressure should be adequately controlled from the early stages of diabetes to prevent diabetic nephropathy. ACEI and ARB are drugs of choice for blood pressure control in diabetic patients. Hypoglycemic agents should be used carefully for patients with renal dysfunction, because of the higher risk of hypoglycemia.
