[ Summary ] The total number of eligible transplant recipients exceeds the number of peritoneal dialysis patients at this time. Approximately 10 % of patients requiring kidney transplantation are diabetic. They continue to maintain metabolic conditions even after transplantation. It is necessary to avoid cardiovascular accidents after transplants through evaluation of cardiovascular risks before transplants. However quality of life for diabetics and the probability of survival are better for transplant recipients than for those receiving continued dialysis care.
Recently, the number of simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplants for type I diabetes has increased after enactment of an organ transplant law proposal. Both kidney transplantation alone and simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplants are defined as necessary for patients with vascular damage from dialysis. Blood sugar control is therefore important for the survival of these patients. Transplantation has become a universal treatment for diabetic nephropathy.
