[ Summary ] In Japan, the universal screening system is well developed. However, there have been few epidemiological studies on the outcomes of chronic kidney disease (CKD) cases and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) cases. "The Okinawa Dialysis Study (OKIDS)" uses two registry sources, universal screening data for the general population and for dialysis patients in Okinawa. By combining the two registries, outcomes for screened subjects such as ESKD patients have been determined. Observational cohort studies are useful when clinical knowledge is difficult to verify through randomized controlled trials. The Japanese Society of Nephrology started an on-line registration of CKD cases and renal biopsies. The Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy (JSDT) is conducting a nationwide survey concerning chronic dialysis patients. More than 0.7 million dialysis patients have been registered in the JSDT study. Upon verification of the database, we will publish several observational cohort studies.
