[ Summary ] Hemodialysis patients are treated with various medications. Because there are many complications due to these medications a wide variety must be implemented. Therefore, these patients comprise a high risk group for drug-induced adverse events especially gastrointestinal disorders. Hemodialysis patients often consume NSAIDs, including low dose aspirin for arthralgia, lumbago and thrombotic problems. These drugs often cause gastrointestinal hemorrhaging. The risk of hemorrhage is even higher in hemodialysis patients. Alternately, phosphate binders such as sevelamer hydrochloride, lanthanum carbonate, cinacalcet hydrochloride may lead to drug-induced gastrointestinal disorders in hemodialysis patients. These include constipation and tympanites. Severe cases may lead to ileus and intestinal perforation.
We must prescribe the above mentioned medications for dialyzed patients, with the greatest care and knowledge.
