[ Summary ] Practice guidelines have not been clearly developed concerning information to determine the introduction or withdrawal of renal replacement therapy (RRT) for acute kidney injury (AKI). This paper, includes a textbook description of the introduction and withdrawal of RRT. The results of scientific studies of AKIN have led to definitions of the condition and appropriate staging. The accumulation of information from clinical studies using this definition has made it possible to publish the KDIGO, AKI clinical practice guidelines. Statements concerning the introducton and withdrowal of renal replacement therapy are presented.
Incorporating the future results of intervention studies and the accumulation of clinical experience using the AKIN classification, AKI treatment using truly-evidence-based guidelines may be created to greatly help with practical decision-making.
