[ Summary ] Dialysis patients with dementia may encounter difficulties which will make continuation of treatment problematic. Peripheral and core symptoms as well as problems managing CKD-term storage are common in these patients. It is important that staff members have proper communication skills to explain and treat these symptoms. To provide high levels of care for these patients their caregivers must be highly competent. Dialysis nurses must establish a high level of trust between themselves, patients and patients’ families before the onset of dementia so the nurse may be part of the long-term memory of dialysis patients with dementia. Risk avoidance is vital to provide the highest quality care. Providing support for the families of these patients is also a key component in their care. Development of support networks in the patient's locality is also essential.
