[ Summary ] Chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorders (CKD-MBD) develop early in the course of CKD, and should be recognized as progressive disorders, which may begin in the predialysis period. New epidemiologic data have demonstrated that the association between abnormalities in biochemical parameters of CKD-MBD. Clinical outcomes such as progression of CKD and increased mortality can be found in predialysis patients. This suggests that interventions in the predialysis period to control biochemical parameters may improve patient-level related outcomes. In relation to these factors, the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy released their Clinical Practice Guideline for CKD-MBD in April 2012. It is hoped that these new guidelines not only improves management of CKD-MBD in predialysis patients in Japan but also offer an opportunity to produce further clinical evidence to support predialysis treatment for CKD-MBD in Japan.
