[ Summary ] It is well-known that a major cause of death for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is cardiovascular disease (CVD). Furthermore, the number of patients with calcified lesions is markedly greater in patients with CKD than in those without CKD. Many studies have also reported that vascular calcification is associated with the occurrence of CVD. Thus, vascular calcification is known to be a crucial risk factor influencing mortality, especially in patients with CKD. Therefore, the prevention of vascular calcification is very important for these patients. In relation to the above information, assessment and prevention of vascular calcification is necessary to manage patients with CKD in clinical settings. We hope that revised guidelines may be used to prevent the progression of vascular calcification and improve prognoses for patients with CKD.
