[ Summary ] Although many observational studies have shown lower mortality risk for hemodialysis patients treated with active vitamin D receptor activator (VDRA), there is some controversy concerning the benefits of this treatment for daily dialysis practice. Researchers conducting randomized controlled trials have reported results in favor of the pleiotropic actions provided by VDRA, as well as possible reductions in cardiovascular risk. In addition, nutritional vitamin D may be useful even for patients requiring dialysis treatment.
