[ Summary ] Constipation is a common complication observed in hemodialysis patients. Restrictions of drinking water as well as dietary fiber to prevent interdialytic weight gain and hyperkalemia are the major factors leading to constipation in hemodialysis patients, In addition, the prescription of newly developed oral phosphate binders presents the possibility of worsening the degree of constipation. Recently, the number of cases in which patients developed life-threatening complications such as the rupture of sigmoidal colon has increased. Therefore, we must pay attention to the defecation habits of patients and prescribe suitable laxatives while evaluating pharmacologic mechanisms important for maintaining patient quality of life.
