[ Summary ] Many factors influence the dietary habits of dialysis patients, such as physical symptoms concerned with renal insufficiency, large quantities of medicines consumed and side effects from medicines, as well as extension of dialysis time and declines in activity. Preventive measures to avert malnutrition include making lists of the causes of symptoms and working out solutions. In addition, we must confirm supplementation routines, including refill schedules. The simplest and easiest method is to nourish dialysis patients intravenously during dialysis sessions. In addition, we must examine treatment choices such as nutrients for intestinal administration in consideration of cost. Recently, oral nutritional supplements for chronic renal failure have been developed. As a result, oral nutrition for early stage renal failure now considered to be effective.
