[ Summary ] Anticoagulant agents are required during procedures requiring extracorporeal blood circulation. Various agents are available for this purpose including heparin, low molecular weight heparin, nafamostat mesilat and, argatroban. Different anticoagulant agents must be chosen in light of their individual half-lives and the inhibitory site. The possibility of bleeding, due to pathological conditions, the type of extra corporeal circulation method employed and AT-III levels must also be considered. Individual medication methods and monitoring procedures must be considered for particular agents to provide safe and effective treatment.
