[ Summary ] Dialysis patients face many risks for peripheral arterial disease (PAD). The prevalence of PAD in these patients is surprisingly high. Once PAD progresses to critical limb ischemia (CLI) develops, the prognosis for these patients deteriorates significantly. Therefore, early detection and treatment of PAD in dialysis patients is important. Efforts to diagnose PAD using ankle-brachial pressure indexing (ABI) or skin perfusion pressure (SPP) are gradually being accepted in Japan. However, evidence concerning medical treatment for PAD patients who are receiving dialysis therapy still remains very limited. The goal of medical treatment for PAD is to decrease cardiovascular risk, to improve walking distance, and finally to prevent the progression to CLI. It is necessary to accumulate more evidence concerning medical treatment for PAD in dialysis patients.
