[ Summary ] Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are susceptible to complications related to cerebrovascular disease and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Antiplatelets and anticoagulants, which prevent blood clots in the heart, arteries and veins, are often prescribed for CKD patients to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events and strokes. On the other hand, reduced renal function in CKD patients is associated with a high bleeding risk due to high drug concentrations in the blood because of poor drug excretion. Therefore, the proper use of antiplatelets and anticoagulants is very important for CKD patients. We must consider the benefit-risk ratio when administering these medications.
This paper covers current information concerning the action of antiplatelet and anticoagulant treatments for CKD patients.
