[ Summary ] In Japan, nearly 300,000 end stage renal disease patients receive hemodialysis therapy and more than 110,000 hemodialysis machines are in operation. Recently, hemodialysis machines equipped with semi and fully automatic extracorporeal blood circuit systems are being developed for various purposes. These include prevention of accidents caused by human error and to perform complicated procedures, as well as to provide standardization of hemodialysis therapy, and to determine the most suitable operative procedures. In this review, we examine different procedures carried out with various types of hemodialysis machines equipped with automated extracorporeal blood circuits from the following aspects; reverse filtration 1) with a mixture of dialysate and blood and 2)with blood with a 0.9 % NaCl solution. We evaluated what types of machines are suitable for hemodialysis therapy.
