[ Summary ] Since the early 2000s, new peritoneal dialysis solutions, having neutral pH levels, low-glucose degradation products (GDP) and being icodextrin-based, have been used in Japan. These new solutions produce fewer adverse effects in peritoneal membranes than conventional peritoneal dialysis solutions. Furthermore, these new solutions provide good ultrafiltration capacity and can improve the fluid status of peritoneal dialysis patients. However, there remain problems that with small quantities of GDPs remaining in these new solutions. Metabolites such as maltose may present a potential risk of toxic effects in icodextrin-based solutions. Future peritoneal dialysis solutions should be made more biocompatible, and should not be expensive.
In addition, it is necessary to improve patients' quality of life using new automated PD systems such as a wearable PD units with circulating solution regeneration systems.
