[ Summary ] The social environment surrounding medical issues has become more severe. It is necessary to share our opinions of socioeconomic values by discussing the reward derived form therapy. The socioeconomic values of therapy may be explained through the formula: recovery of health (outcome) รท consumption of resources (cost) = performance = value. According to reports on cost utility analysis (US $ / QALYs), PD (peritoneal dialysis) has the potentially to provide greater socioeconomic benefits than HD (hemodialysis) in early stages. Promotion of research which uses incremental cost utility ratios (ICUR) is expected. This will be necessary because the present information available on healthcare economic evidence concerning PD is limited.
