[ Summary ] In order to clarify the actual medical status of peer support for dialysis patients, we carried out a postal questionnaire survey of 800 patients receiving dialysis. The result revealed that the most recognized peer support for dialysis patients was the emotional support received through their relationships with other patients with similar conditions. These patients encouraged each other to endure. The patients were encouraged by their relationships with other patients who had the same disease, which in turn led to a determination to accept their conditions. On the other hand, we recognized that patients' ability to grow and change was helped through the support of others, since types of support, were limited. The results suggest ways in which needed support can be achieved. Patients can recognize the effectiveness of peer support. Through this support they can find satisfaction and develop affirmation of their lives.
