[ Summary ] Approachs to provide support within self help groups in clinical settings and putting theory into practice when implementing patient support provided by peers are illustrated. Practical methods for nurses to provide support for self help groups are introduced also.
It is necessary for us to know the differences between support which may be provided by specialist and by patient peer groups. To do this, self help groups are defined and self help is characterized. The experiential knowledge entailed and the helper-therapy principle, which are key factors, facilitating self help are discussed. Peer support and methods by which it may provide support and aid are also shown.
