[ Summary ] The Great East Japan Earthquake occurred on March 11th 2011. The epicenter was approximately 130 kilometers east of the Sendai area. It was the most powerful earthquake ever known have hit Japan.
In Miyagi prefecture, due to the widespread destruction of infrastructure, most hemodialysis centers were unable to continue dialysis treatment. At the Sendai Shakaihoken Hospital, a regional dialysis hospital in Miyagi, we continued hemodialysis treatment for 90 hours after the initial disaster.
In this issue, we present our experience in maintaining dialysis therapy in disaster situations, and discuss plans for future disasters.
