[ Summary ] The number of individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) receiving dialysis and being CKD stage 5D patients in Japan is increasing yearly. The number one cause of dialysis initiation has been diabetic nephropathy since 1998. Moreover, diabetic patients receiving dialysis are prone to suffer from cardiovascular diseases such as myocardial infarctions and strokes. This results in poor prognoses as compared to those not having diabetes. The epidemiological and clinical characteristics of diabetic subjects receiving dialysis in Japan are similar to those in the United States. In clinicoepidemiological studies, it has become evident that poor glycemic control at initiation of and during dialysis may be a risk factor for death in dialysis patients with diabetes. Therefore, the glycemic control to inhibit the progression of diabetic complications and to improve patients' outcomes is important even at this particular stage of CKD-5D.
