[ Summary ] Traditionally dialysis is initiated with the slow initiation method. This method involves lower blood flow, smaller dialyzer membranes and shorter dialysis sessions to prevent both disequilibrium syndrome and intradialytic hypotension. However, there is no specific way to initiate dialysis. Actual methods used depend on individual dialysis staffs, the particular patient and the unit. Since smaller dialyzer membranes have minimal affects on priming volume and dialysis efficiency, traditional slow initiation modalities do not seem to be appropriate. Standardized dialysis initiation improves dialysis staff work loads and affords the promise of safer dialysis to patients.
