[ Summary ] Patients with kidney failure, often experience an accumulation of uremic toxins and secondary hyperparathyroidism, which may induce insulin resistance. Impairments in metabolism, gluconeogenesis, and egestion of insulin in the kidneys often result in hypoglycemia. The rapid decreases in blood glucose levels during hemodialysis lead to reactionary hyperglycemia after hemodialysis. For glycemic control in diabetic patients who are undergoing hemodialysis, both dietary management and adequate understanding of the complex mechanisms of glucose metabolism are required.
