[ Summary ] When considering patients' lives, diet plays an important role. Coordinated treatment by medical teams, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, social workers and dieticians, is required for patient care.
Major changes in nutritional needs occur with the initiation of PD. High calorie low-protein diets are the foundation of preserving the lives of end stage renal disease patients. Protein restrictions as well as 0.5 g/kg are needed for ESRD patients.
The foundations of nutritional profi les post PD introduction must include outlines of, caloric restriction to approximately 30 - 35 Cal/kg/day. In addition, we must calculate glucose shifts due to dialysis solutions. Caloric restriction is also required for PD patients. Protein intake should be in the 0.9 - 1.2 g/kg/day range and deviating slightly from normal levels.
After long periods of PD administration, hyperlipemia often accompanies low protein levels in many PD patients. After PD is introduced, patients' conditions must be checked precisely, and we must adjust their nutrition in relation their condition.
