[ Summary ] Intradialytic hypotension is a common complication of hemodialysis (HD) patients. Intradialytic hypertension is also an important complication of HD, 10-15 % of these patients. Fluid overload plays an important role in intradialytic hypertension. Therefore, fluid removal remains a key point for treatment of intradialytic hypertension. On the other hand, intradialytic hypotension may be prevented by using acetate-free dialysis fluids, cooling dialysis fluids, hemodiafiltration (HDF) and on-line HDF. Moreover, intradialytic hypotension results when a large volume of extracellular water is removed over a short period. Therefore, forms of slow ultrafiltration rate dialysis, such as short daily HD or nocturnal HD are recommended.
