[ Summary ] Recent research suggests that end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients are more likely to be cognitively impaired than the general population. The incidence of cognitive impairment in ESRD patients deeply impacts their family in several ways. The purposes of this review article were : 1)to classify the issues raised in researches regarding the families of ESRD patients, 2)to describe stresses in the families of dementia patients who do not have ESRD, 3)to explain the specific stresses faced by the families of ESRD patients, and 4)to suggest methodologies to support those families.
